Today, the food supply chain is not sustainable. Post-harvest losses of fresh produce are estimated at 25% and 40% worldwide, and around 10% loss occurs during storage. Popular fruits such as apples, pears and berries suffer a loss of €6.1B per year globally in storage. The demand for less-chemical or chemical-free fresh produce results in the increasing need for a responsible food supply chain. Regulatory bans on chemical usage and the popularity of organic produce increase the vulnerability of quality degradation and loss during storage.
Infitiv offers innovative solutions to reduce food loss in the post-harvest stage for a sustainable and responsible food supply chain.
Infitiv is developing a terahertz sensor and decision support software to provide an early warning system to prevent quality degradation and spoilage of fresh produce in storage. Our solution generates value to players in the fresh produce storage including storage facilities for fresh produce, controlled atmosphere storage equipment manufacturers and growers.
The terahertz sensor, based on terahertz technology developed at European Space Agency, can measure the quality parameters which indicate the ripening, rot and fungus problem of fresh produce during storage. The sensor will be compact, highly sensitive, highly accurate and cost-effective. Our decision support software will offer early warning of quality changes to enable our customers to take actions to reduce further loss and optimize the sales strategy.
